The summer palace of Wilhelmshohe is located above the town of Kassel, Germany, and is masterpiece of the largest urban park in Europe.

The Landgrave Wilhelm IX built the neo-classical three wings structure from 1786 to 1798. The castle has three wings which were originally independent, connected to one another only by terraces. These three wings are the main building, the chapel wing and the Weissenstein wing.

The Ball House is the result of the Europe’s passion for dancing from the early 1800’s. Because the old dance hall nearby had been demolished in 1824, originally the ballroom was intended for public use, but in the end it was reserved for court society only. The ballroom makes a great contrast with the simple outward. The visitors enter a spacious interior naturally lighted during the day and grandly illuminated in the night. Arabesques were painted on the walls and ceiling. Peretz, cockatoos, ravens between a canvas festoons are displayed by the colorful frieze over marbled three-quarter columns. Six couches that do no longer exist were included in the original furniture. The ballroom is decorated in French style which still prevailed at the European courts at the time it was erected and now is Kassel’s sole remaining example of the late empire interior decoration.

The castle is reachable using the Wilhelmshohe’s tram system or the bus system. The city has two train stations which connects it with the rest of Germany and an autobahn.
