The town of Balla is situated 5 miles to the east of Castlebar on the N60. It is 8 miles from Ballinrobe, 6 miles from Kiltimagh and 10 miles to the west of Claremorris.

Turlough Park is found in the parish of Turlough. In the middle of the 19th century the Fitzgerald Family had Architect Sir Thomas Newenham Deane to design the house which was then constructed in 1865. An impressive landscaping scheme was implemented to match the design. The Turlough Park Victorian Gardens includes a manmade lake, terraces and islands. From the front of the mansion you can see a glasshouse.

Try to make it to Castlebar for the Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail Festival whoich is a three day walk along the trail. Transport is provided to and from the start and finish points. The trail passes through raised bogs, rolling fields and deciduous woodland.

Other places to see are The Royal Theatre and the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life both in Castlebar.

Castlebar is also home to one of the chief GAA stadiums in western Ireland and frequently hosts matches with a sitting capacity of over 40,000.

The area around Castlebar is great for walking and it has some of the best fishing lakes in the Western Ireland. Bsides golf, you can take part in outdoor activities like sailing, diving and horse trekking.
