Ballintubber Abbey (www.ballintubberabbey.ie) is situated around ten miles away from the town of Westport in Ireland. The Abbey was founded by King Cathal Croudearg O'Connor of the red hand, in 1216. The Abbey is open daily from 0900 to 12 midnight, and still holds mass regularly; times may be found on the website. Weddings and retreats may be booked at the Abbey. Visitors are welcome to visit the grounds and the nearby Celtic Furrow Museum, which depicts 5000 years of life in Ireland. The nearest airport is West Knock, Ireland, around 22 miles away, whilst the N4 motorway runs from County Mayo to Dublin is close by.

Westport is a town in County Mayo on the west coast of Ireland. It was a planned town commissioned by the Marquess of Sligo for his workers and tenants to live. The main style of architecture within the centre is Georgian, and there is a tree-lined promenade. Westport House, the stately home of the Marquess of Sligo was built in the 18th century. It stands on the site of one of Grace O'Malley's castles, the dungeons of which may still be seen (Grace O'Malley was the famous Irish Pirate Queen). There is now a Pirate Adventure Park within the grounds, which offers amusements and pitch and putt, amongst other attractions (www.westporthouse.ie)

Nearer to the Ballintubber Abbey, outside Castlebar is Breatty House Hotel, which has three stars and which dates back to 1890. It offers a swimming pool, fitness centre and restaurant.
