The Baltimore Civil War Museum is located inside what used to be Baltimore's main train station, the President Street Station. After rail traffic to the station ceased in the early twentieth century, the station fell into disuse and was only renovated in the 1990s, paving the way for the museum's grand opening in 1997.

The museum is funded and operated jointly by the Maryland Historical Society and the group Friends of President Street Station. Currently (as of late 2009) there are possible plans to use part of the building for commercial purposes, though the city has assured (and groups such as Friends of President Street Station have demanded) that the building's historic purpose and character be preserved.

The museum offers school groups educational programs sponsored by the Maryland Historical Society. Admissions to the museum cost $4 for adults, $3 for children between 13 and 17 years old as well as students with valid ID, and is free for children under 13. The museum's hours are: every day from 10am-5pm, though occasionally it will close between 12:30pm and 1pm.
