Located in Savannah, Georgia, the Bamboo Farm & Coastal Gardens is an experimental research station. The garden was established in 1890 by Mrs. H.B. Miller. Mrs. Miller planted three Japanese bamboo plants and by 1915, a small bamboo grove had formed. Then, in 1919, Barbour Lathrop bought the garden and proceeded to lease it to the Department of Agriculture for just $1. The site was then deeded to the University of Georgia in 1983. Today, the Bamboo Farm & Coastal Gardens maintains more than 140 varieties of bamboo. It is the biggest bamboo collection open to the public in all of North America.
