Planted in April of 1873, the Banyan Tree marked the 50th Anniversary of Christian missionary work in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. Grown from just 8 feet in height, it now stands over 60 feet tall. A popular locale for tourists and locals alike to kick back, relax, and enjoy the shade, it stretches over a 200-foot area- that means shade for 2/3 of an acre! To supply all that cover, this Indian Banyan Tree is supported by 12 major trunks, and a gigantic core. Located downtown just off Front Street, enjoy the company of this giant, and enjoy Native craft demonstrations held at the square, or simply have a seat on one of many park benches. After enjoying this historical specimen, take in other area historical attractions like the Lahaina Courthouse- home of the Lahaina Arts council and Lahaina Historic Society. Grab a self-guided tour map from the Lahaina Visitors Center, also in the Old Lahaina Courthouse, to visit 31 historic sites, or ask about a guided tour of sites like the Baldwin House, Jodo Mission, and Waine’e Church and Churchyard. Nearby accommodations include the Best Western Pioneer Inn, the Outrigger Aina Nalu, the Lahaina Inn, and the Plantation Inn.
