Known as one of the older airports in China, the Baotou Airport was founded initially in 1934, but was opened officially in 1956. The airport is situated approximately 14 miles from the downtown area, and can be easily reached by bus or taxi. Accommodations close to the airport include the Haide Hotel (Haide Jiudian), Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou, Shenhua International Hotel, Tianwaitian Hotel, Wanhao Hotel, Zhongyuan Hotel, Hongde Hotel, Baotou Henglong Hotel, and other hotels mostly situated in Boatou itself.

The airport is currently under class 4D, and it has a runway of 9,186 feet by 200 feet width. It is well equipped with Instrument Landing Systems, Approach Lighting Systems, touchdown zone, and sequenced flashers, at both ends that enable even Boeing 767-300ER and Boeing 737-900 aircrafts to land in the airport.

So far, the following airlines make use of the Baotou Airport to shuttle passengers to their destinations: Air China, Hainan Airlines, Deer Jet, China United Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, and Shenzhen Airlines.
