The Barbara Thermae are ruins of ancient Roman baths, dating back to the second century, and which were in continuous use until the fifth century. They are situated in the centre of Trier and were part of a much bigger public building project of its time, which included Roman walls and fortifications. The baths take their name from the Barbara suburb in which they are located.

Trier is the oldest City in Germany, dating back to pre 16th century BC. It lies along the banks of the Moselle River, and is surrounded by woodland and vineyards. Attractions include the Trier Cathedral, the second century Roman bridge and the ruins of the Porta Nigra where the Greek monk, Simeon the Hermit lived in 1028. After his death in 1035 a monastery dedicated to him was built adjacent to the Porta Nigra, the Monastery Simeonstift. The Porta Nigra then became a church, but today is open just for viewing from the gateway. The town also offers wine trails around some of the wine related sights and vineyards.

There are a few hotels, but the Pentahotel Trier Europhalle has four stars and is situated in a park in the centre of Trier. It offers a restaurant with a terrace and is close to the Trier Galerie Shopping Centre. A room here costs from 62 Euros per night. The Hotel Constantin has three stars and is situated on the banks of the Moselle. It offers a restaurant, and a room here costs from 38 Euros per night.
