Bärengraben

The Barengraben (bear pit) it’s an a enclosure housing bears located at the eastern edge of the Old Town of Berne,Switzerland, next to the Aare river and to the Nydeggbrucke and became a well-known touristy attraction.
Tourists should know that the bear is the symbol of Berne, both the city and the canton. This enclosure is not the first of this type, three others being built before it. This one was built in 1857, and a smaller pit was added in 1925 for raising the young bear cubs. In 1995 it was renovated and there were added new fixtures: soft gravel, sandstone hills with caves, tree climbing, pools, etc., but the elements can only imitate the great outdoors and do not replace completely equivalent, but they create a habitat in which the five Pyrenean brown bear obviously fell comfortable. Today, the Barengraben is a heritage site of national significance and a part of the city zoo. Unfortunately, tourists will not see bears here today because in 2008 its last two bears were put down due to old age and illness, but they can go to the nearby BarenPark , which is an open-air construction located next to the Aare River, in which will be housed new bears as soon as it is finished, because it is still in construction.
Tourists can get here taking bus no. 12 from the railway station or by foot through Spitalgasse, the Market Street, Kramgasse and the Gerechtigkeitsgasse on Nydeggbrücke.
