Italy is the cultural country of Europe and is home to the greatest number of World Heritage Sites. Breathtaking by day and romantic by night, Italy has everything to offer.

When Italy comes to mind, so does Florence. As the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany, Florence is a historic centre that attracts millions of people to its region every year.

Declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982, Florence is highly regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, while its artistic, historic and cultural heritage remains vast up to the present day.

Not only has Florence been the birth place of many a famous name; Catherine de' Medici, Dante, Donatello, Emilio Pucci, Galileo Galilei, Guccio Gucci and Michelangelo to name a few, it is also the best preserved Renaissance city in the world.

It is home to many Renaissance palazzi, or palaces, academies, parks, churches, gardens, monasteries, art galleries, ateliers and museums. One particular museum that attracts many each year is the Bargello.

The Bargello, which is now an art museum in Florence, was once a former barracks and prison. Also known as the Bargello Palace, or the Palazzo del Popolo (Palace of the People) it was first built to house the Capitano del Popolo (Captain of the People). However in 1865, it opened as a national museum housing the largest Italian collection of gothic and Renaissance sculptures from the 14th to the 17th century.

Those visiting the Bargello, will witness masterpieces from Michelangelo, which include his Bacchus, Madonna and Child and David-Apollo, Donatello's David and St. George Tabernacle, Giambologna's L'Architettura and Mercurio, as well as the bronze bust of Cosimo I, done by Benvenuto Cellini.

The museum also houses ceramics, textile, ivory, tapestries, silver, armours and old coins.

Florence is a breathtaking city to visit and enjoy. Walk the streets, take in the many delights and wonder at the magical beauty that is Florence. Hotels are equipped with spacious rooms, scenic views and nearby attractions and can be found from $140 to $284 per night, depending on where you stay.

Opening Times of the Bargello:

Tuesday - Sunday from 8:15am to 13:50. Open on the first, third and fifth Monday of every month.
