The birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) who was an influential and prolific composer of the Classical era, and the setting for parts of the musical The Sound of Music based on the true story of Maria von Trapp a Salzburg based nun, has made Salzburg a popular cultural retreat for many tourists. One such cultural landmark that is a retreat for art interested visitors of Salzburg is the Baroque Museum Salzburg. Located in the southern wing of the Orangerie of Mirabell Castle, it has housed the private collection of Dr. Kurt Rossacher and his wife Else Rossacher since 1973. Visitors can see progressive sketches and designs of monumental structures in the 17th and 18th centuries and includes work from Rubens, Cortona, Maffei, Bernini and Algardi to name a few of the names present. During peak times, Salzburg is a tourist favourite, with tourist numbers outnumbering those of the locals. However, this shouldn't discourage you from visiting the city as there is plenty to see and do in the cultural city in Salzburg.
