Barri Gotic

Hotels near Barri Gotic, Barcelona, Spain .

The Barri Gotic, or Barrio Gotico is the mediaeval quarter of the city of Barcelona, Spain. Its labyrinthine streets are centred around the Cathedral de la Santa Creu which was built in 1298. The Cathedral faces the Plaza de la Seu. Its faēade is dominated by the central tower and the main door. The tower itself is unusual for being at the front of the Cathedral, as most towers are above the crossing point of the Nave and Transepts. The Barrio Gotico has many traditional shops, such as feather merchants and antiques dealers, plus restaurants and bars.

Barcelona is the capital city of Catalonia in the Basque region of Spain and the spoken language is Catalan Spanish. The city is situated on the Mediterranean Sea at the mouths of the Llobregat and Besos rivers and has seven sandy beaches. On the west it is bordered by the Serra de Collserola ridge of mountains. The city's main industries are finance, commerce and tourism. Many tourists visit the City's historic buildings, in particular those built by Antoni Gaudi, his most famous being the Sagrada Familia (www.sagradafamilia.org) is in the neighbourhood of the same name. It is a privately funded Catholic Church that has been under construction since 1882 and is expected to be finished around 2026. Its most famous architect is Anton Gaudi (1852-1926)a modernist of the art Nouveau Style. He designed the Cathedral to have eighteen towers, 12 for the Disciples, four for the evangelists and one each for Jesus and Mary. The Sagrada is open daily for tourists and worship; a tourist ticket costs 11 Euros. Gaudi was run over by a tram in 1926, and because of his rags, people were reluctant to help him. He was taken to a pauper's hospital and refused to be moved from there when his friends discovered him the next day. He died three days later. The nearest Metro station is Monumental and the nearest airport is Barcelona's El Prat, just under eight miles away.

There are numerous hotels in Barcelona, but the Grand Hotel Central has four stars and offers views over the mediaeval centre and the Cathedral from its rooftop pool. A room here costs from 133 Euros per night. The hotel Sagrada Familia (www.SagradaFamiliaHotel.com) is just a few steps away from the monument. It has three stars and offers a restaurant and seminar/banqueting facilities, as well as private parking. The hotel is gay friendly.
