There's no better way to escape that famous Texas heat than a trip over to Barton Springs Pool. Located in Ziker Park, the pool is technically man-made, but is fed from Barton Springs, the fourth largest natural springs in the whole state of Texas. Originally, the springs were a sacred place for indigenous people to perform healing rituals, and the spot was later discovered by the Spanish. Eventually, the largest springs were named after one of the daughters of William Barton, who bought the land surrounding the springs in the 1830s.

Up until the 1930s, the citizens of Austin would come to swim in the springs when it was a mere swimming hole, but the city went ahead and enhanced the size of the swimming area, as well as added a dam. Since then, it's grown as a serious summer destination for locals and visitors alike to take a dip and beat the heat. It's possible to buy a pass for the entire summer, for either yourself or the whole family.

Barton Springs Pool isn't just for swimming during those hot summer months, though. The springs that feed the pool keep the water temperature at a comfortable 70 degrees, regardless of if it's Christmas or the Fourth of July. Year-round swimming is possible, as the springs stay open, and a day's admission for an adult is only $3.00. Lifeguards are on-site throughout the summer months, and Barton Springs Pool becomes swim at your own risk in the early mornings in spring, as well as in the evening time in the fall.

Located in Zilker Park, a vast green space right smack dab in the middle of urban Austin, it's only a short jaunt from most inns and hotels in central Austin to reach the springs.
