The Cathedral Basilica of Salvador is home to Salvador’s Archbishop. The building was completed in the 17th century by the Jesuit order of Salvador, which was later expelled from Brazil in 1758. A Catholic presence has been in Salvador since the mid-1500’s.

The cathedral is one of the key landmarks in Salvador. It was built in the Mannerist style then popular in Portugal, sharing similarities with a Jesuit church in Coimbra. The façade, made of Lioz stone, features two bell towers and statues of Jesuit saints over the three entrances. The interior of the church is based on the floorplan of the Sao Roque Church in Lisbon, Portugal. The interior altars and chapels offer examples of the exquisite sculpture and paintings from the Baroque period. The sacristy is adorned with Baroque furniture.
