The Basilica of Our Lady's Trastevere, or Santa Maria Trastevere is one of the oldest churches in the Trastevere district of Rome. The basic structure dates back to 340AD, but it is situated on the site of a much older church dating back to 220AD. In 1140-43 Pope Innocent II destroyed the original building, including the recently completed tomb of his rival Pope Anacletus II, rebuilt the church and arranged for his own burial site there. The carved Ionic capitals were taken from the nearby Temple of Isis, and when, in the nineteenth century, scholars discovered that the carvings depicted Egyptian Gods, the faces were hacked off. The Apse is richly decorated with mosaics by Pietro Cavallini. Externally, the faēade has a 12th century mosaic of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, surrounded by ten women holding lamps. The Coliseum is around two miles away, The Vatican City one and a half miles, and the Teatro del L'Opera di Roma also one and a half miles.
