The Basilica of St Lawrence, or Basilica di San Lorenzo, situated in the Colonne di San Lorenzo square, Milan was probably founded in 370AD. Although it was extensively renovated in the 16th century it retained its essential Byzantine structure of a dome and four towers. There are several mosaics inside, but the most prominent is inside the Chapel of Saint Aquilino, depicting Christ the Law Giver, which dates back to the fourth century. This chapel may have been added as a Roman mausoleum. The ceiling over the altar is richly decorated.
