The Basilica di San Petriono is the main church in Bologna, situated in the Piazza Maggiore, and is the fifth largest church in the world, being 132 metres long, and 60 Metres wide, with a vault 45 metres high. Saint Petrionio was the Bishop of Bologna in the fifth century, and the Basilica is built in the Gothic style. It houses a sundial set into the paving of the left aisle, which again is the longest in the world at 66.8 metres. The sundial is a meridian line, with a gnomon facing the noonday sun. Rather than telling the time, the sundial tells the day and accurately measures out one solar year. The façade of the Basilica remains unfinished. Various artists have been commissioned to complete the facing, but none has formulated a suitable design.
