The Basilica di San Vitale is a church in Ravenna, Italy. It is one of eight buildings in Ravenna to be listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its construction was begun by Bishop Ecclesius in 527, and completed by Maximian in 548. It is built on an octagonal plan, and is a combination of Roman and Byzantine architecture. The basilica is most famous for its Byzantine mosaics, the largest and best-preserved collection outside Constantinople.

Ravenna is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Although inland, it is connected to the Adriatic by a canal, and was the capital of the Roman Empire from 402-476. Attractions include the mausoleum of Galla Placida, the Mausoleum of Theodric and Dante's Tomb. The poet was buried in a tomb at St Francis's Basilica that is built in the Neoclassical style.
