The Basilica Sant'Ambrogio is on of the oldest in Milan. It dates back to 379, is dedicated to St. Ambrose, and lies on a site where Roman martyrs were buried. In fact, its original name was Basilica Martyrum. It has had several renovations, but its current Romanesque appearance dates back to 1099, and it still retains the Basilica plan of an apse and two aisles. Externally the flat façade typical of Lombardy Churches is flanked by a portico of pillars. The church has two loggias (balconies open to the air) at different heights. The upper one is where the Bishop stands to bless his flock. There are two bell towers, the lower one dating back to the ninth century and the higher to the 12th.
