The Basilica of St Sernin (or St. Saturnin) was formerly the Abbey of St. Saturnin, built in the Romanesque style between 1080 and 1120. It stands on the site of the former fourth century Basilica containing the body of St. Saturnin, which was the seat of the first Bishop of Toulouse. Despite being a Basilica the building deviates in several ways from that design, in that it is much larger, built of brick and based on the Latin cruciform layout. The Church has a bell tower over the transept, which has five tiers, the lower three being 12th century, the upper two 14th century and a spire added in the 15th century. The Basilica has a large manual pipe organ, one of the most important pipe organs in France. Buildings in the area are built of red stone, thus giving rise to the name of the pink city.

Toulouse is a university city in the southwest of France, with a population of over one million people. Summer temperatures can be very hot - over 40C. Attractions include, Wilson Square with its fountains and the Capitole, or town hall Square, which is home to the Hotel de Ville and the Opera House. Close by there i s the Cite de l'Espace, a space theme park.
