Situated at the corner of Sunshine Street and Campbell Avenue in Springfield, Missouri, the original Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World store marks the beginning of what is now a 54-store franchise with revenue in excess of $1.9 billion annually. Bass Pro Shops started when John L. Morris, the founder of the company, built a small fishing section in the back of his father’s liquor store, selling homemade tackle. With his tackle proving popular, Morris began a mailing catalogue, and soon after the first Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World store. Now an international franchise, the sporting good stores specialize in outdoor recreation products, especially those catering to fishing and hunting.

The stores themselves range from 42,000 square feet to 300,000 square feet, and feature indoor aquariums that display fish indigenous to the area in which the store resides. Stores also feature taxidermy mounts of their regions, and regularly offer Outdoor Skills Workshops, ranging from hunting and fishing skills to camping, cooking, and navigation. As the first of 54 Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World stores, the Springfield, Missouri location is referred to as the “Grand Daddy” of the company.
