Baton Rouge Zoo is located 15 minutes outside of downtown Baton Rouge and is operated by the Baton Rouge Recreation and Parks Commision. Constructed started in 1966 and was completed in 1970; it opened on Easter Sunday of that year. Today the zoo attracts nearly a quarter of a million visitors each year. The zoo contains over 1,800 animals from all over the world. The zoo is also active in conservation and education; it has successfully aided in introducing several endangered species back into the wild. More than 45,000 children visit the zoo as part of its out reach program. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for kids from 2-12 and $5 for senior citizens. The zoo is open 9:30 am to 4pm all week long.
