Hotels near Battleship North Carolina, Wilmington (North Carolina), United States .

The USS North Carolina currently rests at Wilmington, North Carolina’s port. This naval battleship was the first newly-constructed vessel of its kind to be used during World War II. The ship was first launched in 1940 and featured the latest in battleship technology of that time. Because of all the attention the USS North Carolina received from the public, the ship acquired its endearing nickname, the “Showboat”.

The ship was decommissioned in 1947 and was later declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Today visitors to the USS North Carolina can tour the vessel’s interior rooms, the main deck and some of the gun turrets. It is recommended to start your exploration of the ship in the Visitors Center which features an orientation film and exhibits. Then you are free to enjoy the self-guided tour at your own pace; plan to allow at least two hours. The Battleship North Carolina is open every day of the year, including holidays. For a summer and winter hours schedule, visit http://www.battleshipnc.com/.
