1948 marked the first dedication of a U.S. war ship as a memorial museum, when the Battleship Texas became Battleship Texas State Historic Site. It is docked about 5 minutes away from downtown Houston in the Buffalo Bayou. Millions of visitors stop by the ship every year to take a tour of this historic artifact.

Built in 1912, the Texas has seen action during the Tampico incident, World War I and even off the beaches of Normandy during World War II. It is a national landmark. The Texas Wildlife and Parks Department took over control of the ship in 1983. Visitors can tour the battleship seven days a week during the hours of 10 am to 5 pm. The ship is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
