Munich is the third largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg, and is the capital city of Bavaria.
Derived from the Old German word for Mönche, Monks in English, the name Munich was given to honour the Benedictine monks who founded the city. The coat of arms for the city, is also a monk, wearing the colour black and gold, which represent the colours of the Holy Roman Empire which have been used since the time of Ludwig the Bavarian.
In Munich is the Bavarian National Museum. Built by Gabriel von Seidl, the museum has been considered one of the most significant and original buildings of its time. Divided into two main groups; the art historical collection and the folklore collection, the museum houses a large collection of European artifacts which date from the late antiquity until the early 20th century.
Sculptures displayed in the art historical collection include those from Erasmus Grasser, Hans Multscher, Adam Kraff, Ferdinand Tietz, and Ludwig Schwanthaler. The exhibit in this section also includes goldsmith works, glass painting, shrines, ivory reliefs and tapestries.
In the folklore collection, visitors can see traditional Bavarian furnitures, rural pottery and a collection of Sicilian, Bavarian, Neapolitan and Tyrolian wood carvings, including Nativity scenes.
