The Bayhead Marshalling Yard was constructed in the 1950s, in a time where rail traffic was preferred by the populace. Rail traffic only experienced a decline when deregulation on road traffic was approved for the Durban area. Nevertheless, rail traffic still continues but to a lesser extent than before.

The yard consisted of five reception yards, namely, Reception Yard No.1, Reception Yard No. 2, Classification, Exchange, and Mainline Yards. All rail and truck traffic come into the yard from where they are dispatched unto their specific destinations. The yard services several lines including the Gauteng, North Coast, South Coast, City Terminals, Maydon Wharf, and Piers 1 and 2. The Bayhead Marshalling Yard is the main yard for Durban and consists of a total of 45 roads.
