The Bead Museum Washington, D.C. was the exhibition space for the Bead Society of Greater Washington, an organization which attempts to further the understanding of the cultural importance of beadwork.

The society formed in 1983 and its lectures, exhibitions and conferences led to the museum itself opening its doors in 1995. One of the most important functions of the museum has been its dedication to publishing literature on beads. Exhibitions have included the Sacred Bead, which was shown along with its “world” films; To Bead or Not to Bead, which took visitors on a Shakespearean romp; the Bead Timeline of History, the museum’s historical centerpiece; and the Eternal Bead, which focused on the bead as monetary unit. Bad news came to the museum in late 2008, as funding dried up during the economic troubles of the time. The museum was forced to close at the end of the year and put all of its collection into storage. As of 11/09, the museum is still seeking a new home. The Junior Bead Club, on the other hand, continues on at a nearby location. Check the website for details.
