Beamish and Crawfords

Hotels near Beamish and Crawfords, Cork, Ireland .

The Beamish and Crawford Brewery, the largest brewery in Cork was opened in 1792 by William Beamish and William Crawford on the site of an old Porter brewery (Porter is a strong very dark, sweet stout). By 1805 the brewery was the largest in Ireland and the third largest in the world. It modernised in 1865 and went public in 1901, producing its flagship beer, Beamish Stout. The brewery has had many owners over the years, mainly large International companies, currently Heineken International. It closed in 2009 with all jobs lost. Beamish products will now be manufactured by the nearby Murphy's Brewery. The brewery buildings remain in the mediaeval heart of Cork City, and include the Tudor Counting House.

Cork is a city in Ireland, the name deriving from Corcach meaning swamp. It has a population of more than 119,000 and locals have a reputation for rebelliousness. The City is built on the River Lee that splits into two channels at the western end of the city. At the eastern end it flows through Lough Mahon into Cork Harbour. The harbour is the second largest natural harbour after Sydney, Australia, and it is a major Seaport, with quays and docks. Ferries travel from Cork throughout Europe. The City has many, many historic buildings, such as the City Gaol, Bladrock Castle, and the Shandon Steeple; there is also an English Market and a modern Gallery, the Lewis Glucksman.

There are numerous hotels, but those situated in the heart of the old city are the Westview Aparthotel, which has four stars and which overlooks the River Lee. Most rooms have balconies and the apartments are close to restaurants and bars. A room here costs from 80 Euros per night. The Lancaster Lodge is also in the old city on the banks of the River Lee. It has four stars and a room here costs from 58 Euros per night.
