The Begijnhof is one of the oldest inner courts in Amsterdam. It comprises historic buildings, which are mostly private residences. Founded in the Middle Ages, it differed from usual courts as it resembled a convent, and was used by the Beguines, a lay sisterhood of the Roman Catholic Church. Although the Beguines took a vow of chastity and attended Holy Mass everyday, they were free to leave at any time to marry. The Begijnhof is the site of the English Reformed Church today.

Amsterdam was originally a fishing village, but is now the Capital of the Netherlands, with a major port. There are several museums to visit, but the three most popular are the Rijksmuseum (www.rijksmuseum.nl), The Van Gogh Museum (www.vangoghmuseum.nl) and Anne Frank's House (www.annefrank.org). Many tourists like to visit the red-light area of the city and the cannabis cafes, for which Amsterdam is famous. There are numerous squares with cafes and restaurants, and many visitors like to see the city by taking a boat trip along the canals and around the harbour.

Schiphol airport is almost six miles away, whilst Rotterdam is 32. The World Trade Business Centre is around a mile away and the Holland Casino almost two miles. There are three main railway stations to choose from: Amsterdam Amstel just less than two miles away, The Station RAI is very close, whilst Station Amsterdam Zuid is around half a mile.
