Situated on the Brazilian side of the Tri-Border Area, in Foz do Iguaçu, the Bela Vista Biological Refugee is located adjacent to the famous Itaipu Dam. The Dam, which provides 20% of the electrical needs of Brazil, was completed on the River Parana in 1984 and is the largest hydroelectric power plant in the world. The Bela Vista Biological Refugee is operated by the Itaipu Binacional, which also operates the Dam itself.

Bela Vista Biological Refugee is located approximately ten miles outside of central Foz do Iguaçu, at Avenida Tancredo Neves 6702, and was created in the 1970s to provide a home to animals displaced by the construction of the power plant. The Refuge is accessible to tourist by way of a series of walking trails, which allows visitors to observe animals such as jaguars, capuchin monkeys, and others in their natural habitat. Tours can last as long as two hours, so visitors should bring appropriate footwear.

Tours begin on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 8:30 and 9:30 A.M., and at 2 and 3 P.M. On Fridays and Saturdays, tours begin at 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 A.M., and at 2 and 3 P.M. Reservations are recommended, and admission to the Bela Vista Biological Refugee ranges from 9 Real to 18 Real, with children and students receiving special discounts. Combination packages are available for visitors who wish to tour the Itaipu Dam as well as the Bela Vista Biological Refugee.
