Belfast City Hall

Hotels near Belfast City Hall, Belfast, United Kingdom .

The Belfast City Hall (www.belfastcity.gov) is a civic building within the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Situated on a corner of Donegal Square, it divides the commercial and business parts of the city. It was constructed in 1898 in the richly decorativeBaroque style, by Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas, of Portland stone, which is a type of white limestone from the Jurassic period and which is quarried in Portland, Dorset. The stone is highly sought after and was used to build Buckingham Palace and St. Paul's Cathedral. The City Hall spans one and a half acres and is built around an inner courtyard, with four towers, one at each corner, which are topped with a verdigris copper dome. The City Hall has a coffee shop and offers free tours: Mon-Fri at 11am, 2pm and 3pm, Sat 2pm and 3pm. Booking is not available and the tours operate on a first-come first-served basis.

Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland, and as such is part of the United Kingdom. Its prosperity has come from the Irish Linen industry, rope making and shipbuilding. The city's shipbuilders Harland and Wolff built the RMS Titanic, a statue of which stands in the city. The city has two airports, Belfast International and the George Best City Airport. Belfast Castle, located on a hill three miles outside the city centre is also a visitor attraction. It has views over the Lough, a café and antique shops.

Close to the City Hall, Ulster Hall and Grand Opera House is the Park Inn Belfast, which has three stars and offers a gym, sauna and steam room. A room here costs from £51 per night.
