Buenos Aires is divided into a number of barrios, also known as neighborhoods, both official and unofficial. One of the nicest residential neighborhoods in town, Belgrano is great for an afternoon stroll, some shopping, or to enjoy a more authentic side of Buenos Aires. Unlike San Telmo, where you're literally going to be running into tourists from English-speaking countries all day long during the height of vacation season, Belgrano is a mostly residential neighborhood, with a number of out-of-the-way restaurants, pleasant plazas, and some of the fanciest houses and apartments in the city.

Belgrano can actually be sub-divided into a few even more specific neighborhoods, including Barrio Chino, the city's Chinatown, and Bajo Belgrano. Regardless of where you are in Belgrano, if you're looking for the best shopping, head to Avenida Cabildo, like so many of the locals do. Other parts of the neighborhood are popular destinations for antiquing, and a number of affordable and quirky secondhand stores line other main streets, like Luis Maria Campos and Federico Lacroze. Regardless of the street, you're likely to spot one of the city's most exciting sights: packs of dog-walkers. You see the affluent expatriates and locals alike hire dog-walkers to exercise their pets during daylight hours. Belgrano is a hot spot for this, and it's not uncommon to pass a man walking 10 to 20 dogs of different sizes and breeds, all behaving surprisingly well.

A number of the city's buses serve the area, though it's best to take a taxi if you're going on game day. You see, Belgrano is also home to River Plate stadium. River Plate is the town's more upscale football (soccer) team, and the buses are usually packed with fans on Sundays.
