Beltany Stone Circle

The Beltany Stone Circle is situated around eight miles from Letterkenny, county Donegal. It dates back to the Bronze Age and comprises 64 stones. The circle is 44 metres in diameter and the average height of the stones is around 1.8 metres. The standing stones encircle a low tumulus believed to be a burial cairn. To the southeast of the circle is a solitary standing stone around two metres tall. The name Beltany comes from the Pagan festival of Beltane, in which bonfires are lit to represent the sun.

Letterkenny is the largest town in County Donegal, with a population of over 17,000. It is situated on the River Swilly and was originally a 17th century market town. It is a cosmopolitan place and has the only Hindu Temple in Eire. Attractions include St. Eunan's Cathedral built in the Victorian NeoGothic style in the 1800s, Mount Southwell Terrace, a red brick Georgian Terrace of houses and The County Donegal Museum.
