Otherwise known as “The Swamp,” Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field is the official home of the University of Florida’s football team, the Gators. Opened in 1930, the stadium has the capacity to hold just under 90,000 adoring and loyal Gators fans. Located on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida, it was built under the direction of University president John J. Tigert, and has undergone several expansions over the course of the years. The name Ben Hill Griffin, Jr. replaced the original name of “Florida Field” in 1989 to honor the Florida alumnus and citrus magnate. Spectators at games will see the "Pride of the Sunshine", Fightin' Gator Marching Band, mascot couple and therefore minority Albert and Alberta, and real live gators… on the big screen. When not occupied by football fans the venue is used for a variety of campus and community events, rallies, and musical performances.
