Bergen's Tourist Information Centre is situated in the Fresco Hall, which in itself is a tourist attraction and is a traditional building. It offers information about the city and Norway's Fjords. The Hall is in the Vagsallmenning Square just opposite the fish market, which sells fruit, flowers, vegetables, handicrafts and souvenirs. From September to May, the market is open from 07.00 until 16.00, and in June, July and August, it opens from 07.00 until 19.00, admission is free (www.bergenguide.com).

Bergen is the second largest city in southwest Norway and was voted European Capital of Culture 2000. It was founded by King Olav in 1070AD, and lies within a range of mountains called The Seven Mountains (although the exact number is open to debate), and facing a fiord, The Byfjorden.

There are museums and historic buildings along the narrow streets of old Bergen, whilst the colourful modern buildings (much of Bergen was built after 1950) are in themselves attractive to look at. Bergen has a Central Railway station, and the nearest airport is Flesland, some eight miles away.
