Established back in 1840 as a company building, the museum takes its name from Jonas Bergtheil. Mr. Bergtheil was a German who served as a director of the Natal Cotton Company. He is credited for bringing over the first settlers from Germany into Natal, South Africa.

As a result, most of the exhibit is about these settlers who arrived from Europe. The building that houses the museum itself is a historical artifact and is considered one of the oldest buildings in Westville. It has been preserved and is in excellent condition, with its stone walls and timber floorboards remaining intact even after more than a century. The museum also features a garden and an activities room, as well as park-like tranquil surroundings.

The museum is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays until Fridays, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The museum closes on Sundays and on public holidays.

Aside from the Bergtheil Museum, other attractions can be found at Westville including the Palmiet Nature Reserve, where one can find a wildlife park complete with birds and reptiles and experience trail blazing through independent and guided tours. The Pavillion Shopping Centre is also near to the Bergtheil Museum.
