The Bert Mooney Airport in Butte Montana dates back to June of 1927. The local paper at the time, the Daily Miner ran a contest to name the airport—the prize was $35. Although some popular names included Mile High Airport and Pedlar’s Field, the airport was eventually named simply Butte Municipal Airport. Today, the airport has been rechristened—it’s now known as the Bert Mooney Airport—and it offers flights from Skywest Airlines, i.e. Delta, and Horizon Air which provides two direct flights to Seattle each day. There are two runways, capable of handling both large aircraft, such as the Boeing 757 and smaller commuter planes. The airport also features a helicopter based flight school.
