Way back in 1904, a young woman named Mary McLeod Bethune started a school called Daytona Educational and Training School for Negro Girls. With $1.50 in capital and five students, it didn’t look destined for success. More than 100 years later, after tremendous development and transformation from high school to junior college, the school (called Bethune-Cookman since its 1923 merger with Cookman Institute) was awarded university status in 2007.

Today, Bethune-Cookman offers 35 undergrad degrees through seven schools and is accredited by SACS-COC. The School of Education and School of Nursing are also accredited.

Outside of academics, Bethune-Cookman is known for its strong athletic and extra-curricular activities. The Wildcats are a division 1 team in the NCAA’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Marching Wildcats (a marching band known as “the Pride”) make frequent performances at national celebrations and drive the sports teams’ halftime and pre-game ceremonies.
