Betsy Ross House

The Betsy Ross House is located at 239 Arch Street in Historic Philadelphia, just blocks from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Betsy Ross, the famous first flagmaker lived in the house from 1773 to 1785; today visitors can view the home furnished with 18th century antique pieces and reproductions. Original Betsy Ross items can be found throughout the house including her eyeglasses, Bible and quilted petticoat.

Although there are no written records to prove the story of Betsy Ross, legend has it that she sewed the first version of the Stars and Stripes that was adopted in 1777 as the United States’ national flag.

The Betsy Ross House is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April through October; the house is closed Mondays, October through March. Admission is $3 for adults an $2 for children 12 and under. For directions, group information and a listing of programs offered, visit http://www.betsyrosshouse.org.
