Bib-Rambla Square

The Plaza Bib-Rambla is a popular place in the historic city of Granada, Spain. The square hosts a market and is also bustling with restaurants, a large decorative fountain in the centre with giants on it, and is where many people come to meet with friends of buy their food and drink. Many fashion vendors have also set up shop here, and the area has become a kind of fashion capital for locals and tourists alike.

In older times, this square was used as the site of bullfights, jousting, and even Inquisition burnings.
The name “Bib-Rambla” means “Gate of the River” as this square used to be next to a river. The square has changed a lot over time, with new buildings, changing architecture, and of course, the river no longer flows along its edge.

As tourists enter the square from Zacatín, the streets on the left didn't use to exist in the 16th century, and this was where the fish and meat markets were located. Later the square was used for a vegetable market but this was abolished in 1837 when a fountain and a platform were erected in the middle, constructed from materials from nearby convents which had been demolished. The meat and fish markets were moved in 1880. The fountain was replaced by the statue of Fray Luis de Granada which now sits in the Santo Domingo square.

The Fountain of the Giants which is currently in the middle of the Bib-Rambla square was errected in the 17th century from Elvira stone and was relocated here in 1940. It presents giants supporting the lower bowl with a statue of Neptune on top.
The square is famous today for its flower stalls which are one of the most popular items to be found here, and the flowers are gorgeous, bright, and of many different varieties.
