Big Ben is the nickname of the great bell in the clock tower at the northern end of the palace of Westminster. It is the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. A clock tower was first built on the site in 1288, but the present one was built in 1834, after the old palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire. The tower was built in the Gothic revival style and is roughly 16 stories high. The tower leans to the northwest by a little over eight inches. Due to security concerns, Big Ben is not open to the public; however, from time to time press, TV cameras and ViPs are allowed in to climb the 334 steps to the top. The nearest Underground Station is Westminster on the Circle and Jubilee Lines.
