Alabama’s most popular attraction, the Birmingham Zoo brings in over 500,000 visitors each year. It is home to approximately 750 animals of 250 species (many of which are endangered) for six continents. The 122 acre zoo was founded in 1950 and today prides itself on its participation in several species survival programs.

Located in Lane Park and near the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the zoo is a great stop for tourists and locals looking to enjoy a day of outdoor fun. Not only is it the permanent home of many animals and exhibits, but it also hosts traveling exhibits. A list of past temporary displays includes bats, koalas and black-footed penguins. Most recently, the zoo has completed its Junior League of Birmingham – Hugh Kaul Children’s Zoo, a $15 million dollar investment.

The Birmingham Zoo is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission prices are $12 for adults, $7 for children and senior citizens and free for members. Admission is half-price on Tuesdays, as well (September 2009).
