Bishkek Airport is now known as the Manas International Airport; it is located 25 kilometers north-northwest from Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. It is a joint military and public airport also known by its former name, Manas Air Base which was a US Air Force base. It is a busy airport – in FY 2007, it serviced more than 600,000 passengers.

The old Bishkek Airport was located south of the city; however, it was decided that the new airport be placed to the north of the city. It was named as Manas International Airport after a local epic hero, Manas, as suggested by Chinghiz Aitmatov, the country’s most prominent intellectual and writer. It was also dubbed as Ganci Air Base by the American troops in honor of Peter J. Ganci, Jr., the chief of the New York Fire Department who was killed during the September 11 terrorist attack in the city.

Several airlines operate flights to and from domestic and international destinations. Airport facilities include ample parking spaces, several restaurants, shops, barber shops, and restrooms. Being home base to military and some public aircraft, Bishkek Airport also has facilities for aircraft parking, refueling, and maintenance.
