The Black Fashion Museum was a site dedicated to the study of dressmaking in America. Featuring period garments as well as modern designs, the museum aimed to showcase the contribution to fashion throughout time by people of the African Diaspora. One of the highlights of the collection is the dress made by Ann Lowe for Jacqueline Bouvier’s wedding to JFK. The museum was founded in Harlem by Lois Alexander Lane in 1979 and moved to Washington along with Lane in 1997. The house itself may have been a stop along the Underground Railroad in the 1800s. The museum location has closed, though the collection will be moving to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, to open in 2010. The African American Civil War Memorial is located nearby.
