Blankenese is a western suburb of Hamburg in the district of Altona, and is one of the Elbvororten; it is capital of the district office including the districts of Nienstedten, Osdorf, Lurup, Iserbrook and Sülldorf. Blankenese being a small village in the outskirts of Hamburg it is well known for its beautiful villas facing the river Elbe. It is also home to the rich and wealthy who have built their regular residence or summerhouses here. You can easily reach Blankenese on the S1 and you can walk downhill from the train-station to the river Elbe, where you will come across some of the most beautiful villas along the way. Many of the large properties, ancient trees and stately mansions of ship-owners and merchants are now parks in public ownership. These include Baur's Park at the marina Muhlenberg and the Hesse Park at the former tax office. Hidden at the western end of Blankenese, on a south-facing slope high above the Elbe River, is the Roman garden. This garden was laid out in a southern garden tradition at several levels. During the summer, there are small outdoor theater performances that are held here. Shopping in Blankenese is both pleasing and exciting. The Gaensemarkt Passage is an indoor shopping area - a glass roofed mall - with various shops and cafes on two levels. According to the website, geese were never actually sold here so there is some mystery as to how it got its name. Another important area of shopping here is that clothes seemed especially cheap in Goose Market.
