Blantyre is the largest city, both in land and in population, of the Republic of Malawi. It is the capital of Blantyre District, of the Southern Region of the country, and is considered as the country’s commercial capital – with Lilongwe as the political capital – because of its being a highly industrialized and urbanized city. The city is served by Blantyre Airport.

Blantyre Airport is officially known as Chileka International Airport. This public airport is located 16 kilometers from Blantyre and has two runways equipped for local and international flights – to South Africa and other African nations.

The airport is the main hub of Air Malawi, the country’s flagship airline; this airline has flights to and from London Gatwick, Dubai, and other destinations. The airport houses some very important weather stations which, in most cases, serve as stations for the airport and the general public.

Although already capable of handling international flights and passengers, the Government had plans to expand the airport for increased passenger terminal capacity and widening the runway.

Among the hotels in Malawi are the Sunbird Lilongwe, Kumbali Country Lodge and Conference Centre, and Korean Garden Lodge. Most of the attractions of the area involve game and national parks.
