Blarney Stone

Hotels near Blarney Stone, Cork, Ireland .

The Blarney stone is a large piece of bluestone (dolerite, which looks blue when broken), set into the battlements of Blarney Castle, Blarney, Ireland. Legend tells that when kissed, the stone gives the kisser the gift of the gab (eloquent speech or flattery). The stone was set in position in the 1400s, when legends about its origins were legion. It is thought to be: a piece of the wailing wall, Jerusalem, half of the Stone of Scone, the stone that Jacob used as a pillow, the stone that St. Columba used as a pillow... The list is endless. Tourists flock to kiss the Blarney Stone; however this is not easily achieved. In order to kiss the stone, a person must first climb to the top of the tower then dangle backwards over the edge of the parapet with an assistant gripping their waist, not for the faint-hearted. The Blarney Stone was recently rated the most unhygienic tourist attraction by Tripadviser.

Cork is a city in Ireland, around five miles from Blarney, the name deriving from Corcach meaning swamp. It has a population of more than 119,000 and locals have a reputation for rebelliousness. The City is built on the River Lee that splits into two channels at the western end of the city. At the eastern end it flows through Lough Mahon into Cork Harbour. The harbour is the second largest natural harbour after Sydney, Australia, and it is a major Seaport, with quays and docks. Ferries travel from Cork throughout Europe. The City has many, many historic buildings, such as the City Gaol, Bladrock Castle, and the Shandon Steeple; there is also an English Market and a modern Gallery, the Lewis Glucksman.

There are only a few hotels in Blarney, but the Blarney Woollen Mills hotel has three stars and is a boutique hotel just a few minutes away from Blarney Castle. A room here costs from 63 Euros per night. The Davmar Bed and Breakfast is five minutes walk from Blarney Castle and Blarney Woollen Mills Store.
