Porto is Portugal's second city and capital of the Norte NUTS II region. The city is located in the estuary of the Douro River in northern Portugal. The largest city in the region, Porto is considered the economic and cultural heart of the entire region. The city has an estimated population of about 220,000 (est.2008) and lies at the centre of the political Greater Metropolitan Area of Porto, with a population of slightly more than 1.7 million (est. 2008). ‘Port Wine’ is one of Portugal's most internationally famous products. Port wine, is named after the city because it is produced in Porto, more precisely, from Vila Nova de Gaia, a city just across the river which belongs to the same conurbation. Porto is also one of the most industrialized districts in Portugal, and Maia, one of Porto's satellite cities, has the largest industrial park in Portugal. Porto's attractions include its most popular event St. John’s Festival on the night of 23 to 24 of June. Another major event is Queima das Fitas, which starts in the first Sunday of May and ends in the second Sunday of the month. Porto is famous for a number of dishes from traditional Portuguese cuisine. One such dish is Tripas ŕ Moda do Porto (Tripe Porto style), which still can be found everywhere in the city today. The Francesinha (literally Frenchy) is the most famous popular native snack food in Porto. It is a sandwich with several meats covered with cheese and a special sauce made with beer and other ingredients. Porto is served by Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport which is located in Pedras Rubras. The airport is a state-of-the-art facility, having recently undergone an immense program of renovation due to the Euro 2004 football championships being partly hosted in the city. Other means of transport include; railways, subways/light rail, busses, trams and taxis.
