The Boise Depot is located at 2603 W Eastover Terrace in the capital. Designed by a New York firm and built as a station for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1925, use of Boise Depot as a train station ended in 1997 and today it is a tourist destination managed by the Parks and Recreation Department of the city. Featuring Spanish-style architecture and affording impressive views of the Boise Front, the depot is a major destination on a tour of the downtown area. Inside the depot is the Great Hall, a multi-story atrium with gigantic ceilings and over 3,500 square feet of interior space. On the same grounds are the Platt Gardens which date back to 1927 and were built for the Union Pacific grounds by Ricardo Espino, a noted landscape architect from Spain.

Featuring over seven acres of grounds, filled with ponds, winding walkways in the European style, benches and extensive greenery, the gardens were often the setting for picnics while waiting for trains to arrive in the heyday of the Boise Depot. The Platt Gardens area remains a public park. The depot itself offers free admission for all visitors and is open on Sunday from 12-4 and Monday from 2-6 (October to May) and on Sundays 10am to 6pm, Mondays 12:30pm to 8pm in the months of June to September. The depot can be rented for wedding receptions, fund raisers, corporate parties and business lunches.

Morrison Knudsen oversaw the renovation of the building in 1992. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Nearby accommodations include the Hampton Inn and Suites and the Grove Hotel on S. Capitol Blvd., the Modern Hotel and the Safari Inn Downtown.
