Bones Beach

Bones Beach or Praia dos Ossos is supposedly named for whale bones that were found on the beach. Whales were hunted to near extinction in the area; however, in 1768 whaling was banned by the Portuguese rulers of the time. Today, Bones Beach is a stunning place where you can find yachts, fishing boats and schooners dotting the crystal clear waters. There’s a cobble stone road that leads up to the beach, lined with fruit trees. Restaurants are nearby although you can buy food from local beach vendors. Stores and businesses are nearby as well. The Igreja de Sant’Ana is the oldest church in the area and is well worth seeing.
